partnerships, and engagement.
National Giving Back
Our annual award honors the league that makes a difference off the field by giving back more than they take.
Nominees must demonstrate, through their civic involvement, how the quality of life in their community has been enhanced as a result of their engagement.
The award is given during the annual “Salute to Cities” at the Gay Bowl tournament and goes to the league that demonstrates outstanding commitment to their local community through service.
The winning league receives a $500 donation to a charity of their choice, on behalf of the NGFFL.
We were proud to award the 2019 Commissioner’s Cup
to the Chicago Metropolitan Sports Association.
The CMSA combined the proceeds from this award along with funds raised at their annual Homecoming Event and gave $1,500 each to the Trevor Project and Broadway Youth Center of Chicago.
Local volunteerism
Washington D.C. Gay Flag Football League
DCGFFL commits one full Saturday to a Day of Service, volunteering with nonprofits that benefit the broader D.C. Community.
In the past, DCGFFL has partnered with the Department of Parks and Recreation to clean up and beautify our fields and developing neighborhoods as well as Kids Enjoying Exercise Now (KEEN), to coach young athletes with disabilities in football and other sports. In 2018, DCGFFL worked with the D.C. Central Kitchen and Food & Friends to prepare and deliver meals to D.C. locals who are ill or economically disadvantaged.
DCGFFL also donates to Team DC's LGBT Athlete College Scholarship Fund to acknowledge and encourage out athletes and ally's commitment to competition and community.
San Diego American Flag Football League
The SDAFFL Cares program is our league’s entity who’s primary goal is to give back to the community. One of the events we participate in around the holidays is the We Care Mixer. This is an annual toy drive that multiple LGBT sports leagues from San Diego participate in, to raise money for underprivileged kids and the LGBT Community Center. During the season, the SDAFFL hosts an Easter basket drive, donating hundreds of Easter egg baskets to children locally.
SDAFFL Cares recently held a GoFund me fundraiser essay contest with Fay Elementary's fifth graders!
Boston FLAG Flag Football League
Boston’s league has celebrated its 20th anniversary recently, and set a stretch goal of 2,000 volunteer hours from their players. All teams in both spring and fall seasons participate in a team event together, in addition to offseason weekly commitments that players fulfill. This year, the youth outreach efforts include three different scholarships for LGBT youth to make sports safer and more inclusive, and they hosted their 6th annual Youth Field Day for high school LGBT leaders.
For the 2020 holiday season, this group continued their commitment to helping those in need by partnering with Project Bread.
Denver Gay & Lesbian Flag Football League
The DGLFFL has a passion for community involvement and giving back to the Denver communities through volunteering.
A Denver team volunteers for Food For Thought - Denver, an organization doing amazing work for Denver school kids that may go hungry.
DGLFFL sponsors an annual event with Precious Child; an equipment sports drive that collects gently used sports equipment and distribute them to children in need to encourage sports participation.
They also assist in aiding the local Colorado schools by donating school supplies and funds, and are excited to be adding several new charities from programs with local senior citizens, local animal shelters, and more!
Providence Gay Flag Football League
Giving back will be at the heart of everything they do. In addition to football, the league engages other area non-profit organizations to donate time and resources to improve the lives of LGTBQ+ people in Rhode Island.
The PVDGFFL Board of Directors works to identify local non-profits to partner with.
Minneapolis Gay Flag Football League
MNGFFL is not only about enjoying flag football but also about encouraging community, camaraderie, and to be active participants in the Twin Cities, and to serve as examples for the next generation of LGBTQ+ youth, inspiring acceptance, pride, and self-confidence.
They have helped out with a Special Olympics Glow Run and helped complete yard work at Clare Housing.
Phoenix Gay Flag Football League
The PGFFL gives back through an Athletic Scholarship that has been established through fundraising. They have secured 4 years of scholarships and were able to provide 2 scholarship annually.
The 2019 PGFFL Athletic Scholarship recipients Olivia Roush and Karen Rivas.
PGFFL also runs a Youth Clinic that focuses to show that all kids no matter how you identify can play sports by scrimmaging with AZ cardinal alumni. They also provide volunteers to the ARGA (AZ Gay Rodeo Association) Gay Rodeo which raises funds for AGRA. In total PGFFL provided over 500 community volunteer hours for 2019.
